The Youth Leadership Council is an intensive program that provides training and mentorship to promising Vietnamese youth with an interest in, and potential, to step into leadership roles within their communities.

The Youth Leadership Council supports youth by:

  • Increasing civic engagement and leadership by identifying and addressing community issues;
  • Developing a greater appreciation for diverse cultures and backgrounds;
  • Networking with leaders, mentors, and professionals for future career and educational opportunities.

We accomplish these goals by focusing on four main areas:

Leadership Development

Receive training and ongoing support in teamwork, diversity, interpersonal communication, community development, public speaking, media training, and other critical leadership skills.

Professional Networking

Network and develop relationships with leaders, activists, and professionals from the community.

Community Service

Develop and apply your leadership and professional skills through event planning, and community based projects involving the entire Youth Leadership Council.

Cultural Preservation

Investigate, document, or reflect upon important issues within your life and community.

Applicant Criteria

The VFA Youth Leadership Council seeks to recruit youth who…

  1. genuinely wish to further develop and strengthen leadership and professional skills
  2. have an interest and desire to positively impact their community and schools
  3. are motivated to pursue higher education at colleges or universities
  4. want to network with professionals, community leaders, and public officials

Participating in the Youth Leadership Council involves a serious and ongoing time commitment. Participants are expected to commit about 4-8 hours per month over the course of a year–including weekly training sessions, retreats, field trips, and group projects. Meetings are every other Monday (i.e., twice a month) after school (roughly 4-6pm).
