The Vietnamese Youth Mentoring Network is a response to a community need for strong, structured, and sustainable intergenerational mentoring relationships. Our pilot program provide opportunities for Vietnamese youth age 9-18 to be matched with a working professional or college-level mentor for the purpose of engaging in activities that address four competencies:
- intergenerational social interaction- Youth participants will have the opportunity to develop positive relationships with adults outside their families and will gain necessary social and communication skills.
- cultural knowledge- Many youth are unaware of, or participate minimally in, the many cultural opportunities Seattle affords. Mentoring outings will give youth knowledge of, and experience with, activities within the Vietnamese community as well as other cultural communities throughout the Puget Sound.
- community service- Mentoring and program outings will give youth experience in community service projects, thereby helping strengthen their ties to neighborhood and city.
- academic achievement- By matching youth with college-level or working professionals who have experience with academic success, youth will have access to additional academic support and gain positive academic strategies and skills
Mentors go through an application process that includes a background check. They are then matched with a mentee. The pair commits to spending a minimum of 10 hours a month of quality time together. Quarterly meetings and trainings help mentors and mentees reflect on their experience and develop skills.
