The Summer Youth Program (SYP) is an extension of the Educational Assistance for Student Empowerment (EASE) after-school program. After three successful years, VFA is now preparing for its fourth annual summer youth program.

Description: SYP is a program designed to build on students’ strengths to improve their academic and life potential. Youth will engage in academic enrichment, MSP and HSPE trainings, field trips, and recreation. The 6-weeks program will be held three times per week Tuesday to Thursday from 1 to 5pm (with occasional fieldtrips outside those hours) at New Holly Learning Center, located at 7058 32nd Ave S., Seattle, WA, 98118.  This year, the summer program is divided into three levels.

Level One:     K –3rd graders ~ages 5-8
Level Two:     4th – 7th graders ~ages 9-12
Level Three: 8th grade and up ~ages 13+

Starting Date: The Program will start on July 7th and end on August 13th.

Goals: Through this program, we hope to accomplish the following goals:

  • Increase academic performance in youth, focusing on reading, writing, math and science
  • Maximize the performance of students on the statewide assessment exams – Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) and High School Proficiency Exams (HSPE), which are the successors of the WASL.

In addition, we will develop these developmental assets in our youth:

  • Increase motivation and engagement in learning
  • Increase desire to go to college
  • Increase self-esteem and confidence
  • Increase interpersonal competence
  • Increase cultural appreciation and competence
  • Increase awareness of youths’ roles in and attachment to the community
  • Prevent or lessen at-risk behaviors during the summer
  • Broaden the comfort zones of each individual student

Fees: There will be a fee of $150 per student for the program and $50 for students who are on free or reduced lunch. This fee may be waived for very low-income students, provided that parents fill out a simple scholarship application.

Flyers: Are available in both Vietnamese and English
