Workshop on the WASL
The Parent Advocacy program helps parents become more involved in their children’s education, through home visits, coaching, and a series of workshops on various topics the first year, including how to monitor student progress using The Source, the significance of the WASL, and college preparation and requirements. The goals of the PA program are:
- Increase parents’ awareness regarding parental involvement;
- Increase communication between parents and teachers by actively coaching parents through monthly one-on-one meetings on how to communicate with teachers,
- Remove barriers that prevent parents from being involved in their children’s schooling and
- Foster collaborative relationships between parents, teachers, and non-Vietnamese parents and community members by helping parents plan special community events such as community potluck night, forums for dialogue on family tension and other problems Vietnamese youth are facing.
Workshop on high school graduation requirements
A full-time Parent Advocate provides family support services to Vietnamese parents, many of whom are parents of students in our after-school program, as part of the holistic, family-centric model for helping immigrant students succeed. The Parent Advocate holds meetings, coordinates workshops, and organizes field trips to provide group support for parents. At the meetings and workshops, parents have opportunities to discuss issues and challenges facing their families, interact to build relationships with one another, and learn skills and knowledge that help them support their children or cope with family challenges. Parents receive home visits and individual coaching time to help them develop skills to be more involved.
