Early learning and language issues are key here. For many families who speak limited or no English, jobs are difficult to come by and low paying.
Parents often must work two or three jobs and still cannot afford child care or preschool outside of the home. Thus their children often stay home with Grandma or Auntie who also speaks little or no English. This arrangement is usually fabulous for family unity, emotional development and attachment, but often very limiting for English acquisition.

These children arrive at kindergarten having missed out on vital early literacy opportunities and are often up to three years "behind" before they can hit academic benchmarks for reading and writing in English.

Public schools are doing the best they can, but funds are limited and generally don't "touch" children until they are in kindergarten. Systemic, publicly funded Early Learning opportunities are scarce. Support for families with young children will make a measurable difference, and specific, appropriate supports in the home language will change the trend. Keep up the good work, VFA, it will pay off for all.
